Course : Opportunity Mapping

Maps are the basic info-graphics, which help us understand the information of a particular area in a much better and simpler way.
For us designers we sometimes need to find gaps in certain systems, understand those problems and bridge those.
So to start with we mapped out our home and marked the frequency of conflict points.
So to proceed with it I started with jotting down the parameters over which the conflicts occur:
- Food
- Work
- Space
- Behavior
- Phone Usage
Following are the maps
Next we mapped out frequency of resource over the time in the given space. I mapped out usage of Netflix from March 2020-August 2020.
After the session and discussions we were told to observe the house and surroundings to find specific problems and to describe three context that made the problem more noticeable.
So here are the problems and the contexts:
- Lack of Work Space
Context One : During my sisters office hours she sits in our bedroom, so when i have some work or a session schedule i have to sometimes shift my workspace or sit there in the room itself. Due to this we both get disturbed sometimes.
Context Two : Since there is a lack of proper work space environment their are posture issues which happen.
Context Three : If I were to use a study table in master bedroom there are WiFi range issues.
2. WiFi Dis-connectivity
Context One: It abruptly gets disconnected or has low internet speed during sessions so we need to sometimes change the area we are sitting for better internet connection.
Context Two : While doing project for which internet is absolutely necessary gets hindered, as in the work flow gets hindered.
Context Three: While watching a movie with family on google chrome cast.
3. Phone usage
Context One: After my father comes home my mom wants him to spend time with us , but he likes to get up to date with the news from twitter.
Context Two: If I over use my phone my family gets irritated with me.
Context Three: If anyone of us uses phone , when we are with relatives, the family finds it rude hence we tend to avoid that.
4. Drying the cloths in Monsoon
Context One: As the drying stand is right in front of our storage cupboards it becomes cumbersome almost every time. And there is no other place to keep the drying stand.
Context Two: When there are many number of cloths the space is not sufficient on the drying stand. And hence we have to dry cloths on doors.
Context Three: When there are more cloths we sometimes dry them in living room . And if the cloths are needed the very next day we have to keep the fan on, this leads to loss of electricity.
5. Lack Of Dry Balcony
Context One: We wash are dishes in the kitchen sink itself and dry them on the counter. So it becomes very cumbersome at times while cooking.
Context Two: When the vessels are too many some of them are kept on the dining table after being washed, so before the lunch we have to clean the table and then sit for lunch.
Context Three: If there are too many vessels to wash the sink feels too small to wash so many vessels.
After we viewed our problems in different contexts, I drew a diagram and tried to connect the problems that are mentioned above.
Now that we know the problem areas and the contexts, our mentor told us to choose one of the above problems and do research and gather some hard data and understand how the problem is relevant in other contexts as well.
Now a days work from home culture is getting very popular, and that could possibly lead to posture issues.
Following presentation goes into the depth of why the problem is relevant.

As work from home increases, there could be an increase in posture issues, because of the long hours of sitting and increased usage of laptops, due to the lack of proper work spaces for people working from home.
